Strengthening Community Readiness – Preparing together before the next emergency

Why Preparedness Matters

Advance preparation for disruptions — natural, technological, health, or security-related — saves lives, protects homes, and reduced pressure on emergency services.

Why Now?

Communities are facing more frequent disruptions—from extreme weather and disasters to public health, power outages, and supply chain challenges. Global tensions add to these pressures, increasing the need for preparedness. Everyone has a role in building a strong, prepared community. Building readiness now gives residents the knowledge, tools, and networks to respond effectively, strengthens neighbourhood connections and volunteer capacity, and supports faster recovery.

Examples of emergencies include —but are not limited to:
  • Natural hazards: severe weather events, earthquakes, floods, landslides, wildfires, extreme heat or cold
  • Infrastructure or service disruptions: extended power or communication outages, failure or sabotage of critical infrastructure
  • Public health emergencies: pandemics or disease outbreaks
  • Other unexpected events: hazardous material spills, transportation accidents, or other incidents that disrupt daily life and community services.
