Neighbours Helping Neighbours

Caremongering is a simple but powerful idea: neighbours helping neighbours. It’s a community-driven approach where people come together—especially during emergencies or challenging times—to share resources, offer support, and check in on those who may be isolated or more vulnerable.

In Prince Edward County, we’ve already seen how effective this can be. Informal groups like Caremongering PEC and neighbourhood-based efforts such as the Morrison Point Road (MOPORO) caremongering group emerged during times of crisis, like pandemic lockdowns, when many residents needed extra support. These networks stepped up quickly—delivering groceries, sharing information, and making sure no one was left behind.

Building on What Already Works

ReadyPEC sees caremongering as a vital part of community readiness. These grassroots networks are often the first to respond—long before formal systems can mobilize. They build trust, strengthen connections, and create a sense of shared responsibility.

ReadyPEC would like to build on and support these existing networks, helping them grow stronger and more connected. This could include:

  • Sharing tools and resources to help groups organize and communicate
  • Offering training opportunities (e.g., emergency preparedness, wellness checks)
  • Connecting neighbourhood groups with each other to share ideas and lessons learned
  • Helping expand coverage so more areas of the community are supported

By strengthening these local networks, we can build a more resilient community—one where people look out for each other and are better prepared for whatever comes next.
