Frequently Asked Questions

What is ReadyPEC?
A community-led initiative to strengthen local emergency readiness through preparedness, resources, and community connections. Learn more

Who is leading and coordinating this work?
ReadyPEC organizers bring emergency and military experience, local knowledge, non-profit and business expertise, and media and communications skills—combining strategic insight with hands-on community connections to strengthen local emergency readiness. Learn more about the organizers

How does it differ from existing emergency services?
ReadyPEC complements existing emergency services and community organizations by focusing on household and neighbourhood readiness. It empowers and helps to coordinate residents and local volunteer networks with practical tools, guidance, and training, fostering a culture of preparedness that reduces pressure on emergency services before, during, and after disruptions.

Why Now?
While Prince Edward County has managed emergencies in the past, disruptions are becoming more frequent, complex, and severe. Extreme weather, power outages, supply interruptions, and other hazards increasingly affect vulnerable residents and put extra pressure on emergency responders. ReadyPEC was formed to help the community prepare ahead, reduce risks, and strengthen local resilience.

What is the role of community organizations?
Share information, support vulnerable residents, and help build local networks that can respond during disruptions.

How can organizations get involved?
Options include sharing resources, hosting sessions, participating in training, or helping coordinate volunteers. Learn more

What support is available?
ReadyPEC aims to provide tools, training opportunities, and connections to support your work.

How are volunteers managed?
Volunteers are supported through existing organizations; ReadyPEC helps build capacity rather than coordinating directly.

How does this help vulnerable residents?
By strengthening local networks and preparedness, we can better reach and support those most at risk.

What happens during an emergency?
Organizations stay connected, share information, and support their networks—helping reduce pressure on emergency services.

How do we stay connected?
Through ongoing communication, shared resources, and opportunities to collaborate.

How will this initiative be sustained over time?
Grants support training, tools, and volunteer mobilization, while ongoing collaboration and strengthened neighbourhood capacity help make preparedness part of everyday community life.

How are other communities building emergency readiness?
Other communities in Canada have used this model successfully to check on neighbours and keep essential services running. See examples
